OSRS P2P Melee Training Guide: Best Routes from Level 1 to 99
Melee training in Old School RuneScape is less about finding one monster and attacking it until level 99 and more about choosing what you want the training time to accomplish. The highest experience method may require active play, while an easier method may let you train for hours with very little attention. Slayer gives slower direct melee progress but improves the rest of the account along the way.
This guide covers the P2P melee methods that are currently worth considering, when to move between them, and which equipment upgrades provide enough value to justify their cost. It deliberately avoids listing every low-level monster that can technically be killed for experience.
Players still building the rest of their account can use the MMOWire OSRS hub alongside this page. The OSRS beginner guide also covers early quests, transportation, money, and account progression beyond combat.

Recommended OSRS Melee Progression
The most practical route for a regular account is to skip the weakest early levels with quests, use crabs only long enough to reach important equipment requirements, and then choose a method based on how actively you want to play.
| Account Stage | Recommended Focus | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Levels 1-30 | Waterfall Quest and early Hitpoints quests | Skips slow combat with weak weapons |
| Levels 30-60 | Sand Crabs, Ammonite Crabs, or Gemstone Crab | Cheap and low-risk progress toward dragon weapons |
| Levels 60-70 | Scurrius, crabs, Slayer, or Normal Nightmare Zone | Builds Strength and prepares the account for level-70 weapons |
| Levels 70-90 | Scurrius, Sulphur Naguas, Slayer, or Nightmare Zone | Lets the player choose between active XP, account progress, and AFK time |
| Levels 90-99 | Sulphur Naguas, optimized Nightmare Zone, Slayer, or efficient Pest Control | Finishes the remaining stats using the preferred play style |
This route is intentionally flexible. A player who wants to learn PvM should leave crabs earlier than someone who mainly wants an activity that can run in the background.
Should You Train Attack, Strength, or Defence First?
Raise Attack when it unlocks a weapon that materially improves your damage, then allow Strength to move ahead. Strength increases your maximum hit, so it improves the speed of later Attack and Defence training as well.
Attack is still important, but many training targets have low Defence. Additional accuracy provides limited value when most of your attacks already connect. Defence is usually trained after Strength unless you need a specific armour requirement or are taking too much damage at the method you want to use.
| Current Position | Good Next Goal |
|---|---|
| Below 40 Attack | Reach the requirement for a rune weapon |
| 40 Attack | Train Strength before pushing much higher |
| Approaching 60 Attack | Reach 60 for dragon weapons, then return to Strength |
| 60 Attack and 60 Strength | Increase Strength unless you are deliberately rushing 70 Attack |
| 70 Attack | Use an abyssal whip for Attack or Defence and another weapon for Strength |
| High Attack with moderate Strength | Increase Strength before buying another expensive accuracy upgrade |
Do not use a controlled attack style accidentally. Controlled styles divide experience between Attack, Strength, and Defence. That is convenient for balanced leveling but slower when trying to reach one important requirement.
Use Quests to Skip the Earliest Melee Levels
Waterfall Quest remains the most important early melee shortcut. Its 13,750 Attack experience and 13,750 Strength experience take both skills from level 1 to level 30 without conventional melee training.
Witch's House awards 6,325 Hitpoints experience and is worth completing around the same time. The additional health makes Waterfall Quest and other early adventures safer.
Other useful quests include Fight Arena, Tree Gnome Village, Vampyre Slayer, The Grand Tree, Holy Grail, Scorpion Catcher, and Horror from the Deep. These should not be treated as a mandatory checklist. Complete the quests that fit naturally into your wider account progression instead of delaying all combat until every possible experience reward has been collected.
| Quest | Main Melee Reward | Why It Matters |
|---|---|---|
| Waterfall Quest | 13,750 Attack and 13,750 Strength XP | Immediately reaches level 30 in both skills from level 1 |
| Witch's House | 6,325 Hitpoints XP | Makes dangerous early quests considerably safer |
| Fight Arena | 12,175 Attack XP | Large reward from a relatively short early quest |
| Tree Gnome Village | 11,450 Attack XP | Provides experience while advancing an important quest line |
| The Grand Tree | 18,400 Attack XP | Large Attack reward and useful account progression |
| Holy Grail | 15,300 Defence XP | Skips a substantial portion of early Defence training |
Stop using quests primarily for experience once their requirements and travel time become less efficient than training normally. Their main advantage is eliminating the weakest levels, not replacing the entire melee grind.
Levels 30-60: Sand, Ammonite, and Gemstone Crabs
Crabs are useful because they combine low Defence, high Hitpoints, weak attacks, and long periods of automatic combat. They require little food and allow the player to prioritize offensive equipment.
Sand Crabs
Sand Crabs have 60 Hitpoints and are available in several locations, including the coast south of Hosidius and the Avium Savannah. The Hosidius areas are convenient but can be crowded.
Their aggression expires after roughly ten minutes. Walk far enough away to reset the area, then return to the same position.
Ammonite Crabs
Ammonite Crabs have 100 Hitpoints and are found on Fossil Island after completing Bone Voyage. Their larger health pool reduces the number of target changes required during a session.
A Digsite pendant provides convenient transportation. Building the Fossil Island bank chest is also useful for the wider area, although banking should be infrequent during ordinary crab training.
Gemstone Crab
The Gemstone Crab is a communal training target in the Tlati Rainforest. It remains at one of three locations for ten minutes before burrowing and moving. Entering a nearby cave takes players toward its next active location.
Attacks against the Gemstone Crab award 87.5% of normal combat experience, meaning the per-damage XP is reduced by 12.5%. The method can still compete with ordinary crabs because there are no respawn waits, target changes, or lost overkill damage. Whether it is actually faster for your account depends on your maximum hit, weapon speed, movement between locations, and how much downtime you normally experience at conventional crabs.
After each cycle, the top 16 damage contributors can mine the remaining gem rock. Each eligible player can receive three random unnoted gems, so bring a pickaxe and gem bag when the small amount of additional loot matters to you.
| Crab | Main Advantage | Main Limitation |
|---|---|---|
| Sand Crab | Easy access with several locations | Smaller health pool and crowded popular spots |
| Ammonite Crab | 100 Hitpoints and strong AFK potential | Requires Bone Voyage |
| Gemstone Crab | Continuous attacks with no overkill or respawn downtime | 12.5% reduced XP per damage and relocation every ten minutes |
When to Leave Crabs
Crabs are ideal for reaching weapon requirements, but they do not develop Slayer, PvM skill, or the rest of the account. Move on when you can defeat Scurrius comfortably, gain access to Sulphur Naguas, unlock a useful Nightmare Zone setup, or decide that Slayer progression matters more than completely passive experience.
There is nothing wrong with staying longer when AFK time is the priority. The important point is to recognize what you are giving up in exchange for that convenience.
Scurrius: Strong Mid-Level XP With Useful PvM Practice
Scurrius is one of the best transitions from passive training into actual PvM. The fight introduces prayer switches, movement, additional enemies, and visible attack patterns without punishing mistakes as harshly as more advanced bosses.
The rat-bone weapons created from a Scurrius spine receive powerful bonuses during the encounter. Obtaining the relevant weapon substantially improves the method, so the first few kills may feel slower than the later training session.
Players around base-70 melee stats can produce strong experience, but the exact result depends on whether the solo or group encounter is used, which rat-bone weapon is equipped, how quickly mechanics are handled, and whether offensive prayers and potions remain active.
A reasonable expectation is that developed mid-level accounts can reach roughly 80,000 to 110,000 melee XP per hour under good conditions. Well-executed group kills with the correct weapon can break 100,000 XP per hour, while less optimized players should expect lower results.
Scurrius is especially valuable for a first account because the player gains more than levels. Someone who reaches 90 Strength entirely through crabs may still struggle with movement and prayer changes that a lower-level Scurrius player has already practiced for hours.
Sulphur Naguas: High Sustained Melee Experience
Sulphur Naguas are located in Neypotzli and require partial completion of Perilous Moons, 48 Slayer, and the quest's supporting skill requirements.
Their negative flat armour makes weapons that produce two hits particularly effective. Each individual hit interacts with the target's armour, which gives the Nagua weapon family a major advantage over many conventional melee weapons.
Dual Macuahuitl and Blood Moon Armour
Dual macuahuitl combined with full Blood Moon armour is the strongest commonly used training setup. The armour set can shorten the delay before the next attack after successful hits, while the weapon's two hits take advantage of the Nagua's negative flat armour.
This setup is not free to operate because the armour degrades. Its value comes from the combination of high sustained damage and the low conventional supply cost of the training location.
Glacial Temotli and Sulphur Blades
Glacial temotli and sulphur blades are lower-cost dual-hitting alternatives. They remain effective even though they do not match a fully optimized Blood Moon setup.
A previous version of this guide described both weapons as approximately 10% behind dual macuahuitl. That gap should not be treated as universal. The real difference changes with Strength level, armour, offensive prayer, potion uptime, and whether the Blood Moon set effect is active.
Earthbound Tecpatl
The Earthbound tecpatl is another member of the broader Nagua weapon family. It is a two-handed twin Stab weapon with a four-tick attack speed and requires 55 Attack.
Its main role is providing an accessible dual-hitting Stab option before higher-level setups become available. It does not automatically replace sulphur blades, glacial temotli, or dual macuahuitl at Sulphur Naguas. Those weapons remain more directly associated with the strongest training setups, while the tecpatl is more relevant as an early or target-specific alternative.
Jagex's original specifications for the weapon can be found in the official Earthbound tecpatl poll.
Moonlight Potions
Moonlight potions can be created inside Neypotzli and restore Prayer while boosting combat stats. They greatly reduce the amount of conventional combat and prayer potions required during long sessions.
Realistic Nagua XP Rates
Sulphur Naguas can exceed 100,000 melee XP per hour with suitable stats and dual-hitting weapons. High-Strength players using Piety, full Blood Moon armour, and dual macuahuitl can exceed 150,000 XP per hour in a well-maintained session.
The highest reported results may move into the upper 160,000s or around 170,000 XP per hour, but that should be treated as an optimized ceiling rather than a general expectation. Missed potion boosts, inactive prayer, weaker gear, positioning, and slower target acquisition can reduce the rate substantially.
Nightmare Zone: The Main Low-Attention Option
Nightmare Zone allows players to fight previously encountered quest bosses inside a private instance north of Yanille. It requires at least five eligible quests.
The minigame is valuable because there is no competition, ordinary deaths are safe, and absorption potions allow long sessions without banking for food. It can also provide reward points for useful equipment imbues.
Normal Customisable Rumble
Normal mode is usually the better choice for low-attention training. Select bosses with low Defence and straightforward attacks. Avoid bosses that drain stats, teleport the player, interrupt combat, or force frequent movement.
Obsidian Setup
The traditional obsidian setup requires the obsidian helmet, platebody, platelegs, Berserker necklace, and Toktz-xil-ak. The equipment works as a package, with the armour and necklace boosting the obsidian weapon.
Do not use the obsidian sword by itself and expect similar performance. Without the complete combination, ordinary weapons are generally more useful.
Blood Moon Setup
Full Blood Moon armour with dual macuahuitl is another powerful option against low-Defence bosses. It is most attractive for players who already own the set and accept its degradation cost.
Dharok's Setup
Full Dharok's equipment increases damage as the player's remaining Hitpoints fall. Players normally reduce themselves to 1 Hitpoint with a locator orb or dwarven rock cake and protect their health with absorption points.
Dharok's becomes much more effective at high Hitpoints levels, generally around 92 Hitpoints and above. At lower levels, obsidian or Blood Moon equipment is often more practical.
| Nightmare Zone Setup | Best Use | Main Trade-Off |
|---|---|---|
| Obsidian | Consistent, low-attention training | Requires the complete armour, necklace, and weapon combination |
| Blood Moon | High damage against low-Defence bosses | Armour degradation |
| Dharok's | High-level low-Hitpoints training | More management and weaker performance at lower Hitpoints levels |
Nightmare Zone is the correct method when convenience matters more than drops, Slayer progress, or combat practice. It should not automatically replace every other activity simply because it is easy to maintain.
Training Melee Through Slayer
Slayer is slower than dedicated melee training when judged only by Attack, Strength, or Defence XP per hour. It can still be the best choice for the account as a whole.
A Slayer helmet or black mask provides substantial accuracy and damage bonuses against an assigned target. Good melee tasks can produce solid combat experience while also awarding Slayer XP, points, drops, and access to profitable monsters.
The trade-off is inconsistency. Some tasks have high-Defence targets, awkward locations, or mechanics better handled with Ranged or Magic. Efficient Slayer also uses barrages and cannons for many assignments, so forcing melee onto every task can slow Slayer progression.
Players should consider Slayer when they value:
- Unlocking profitable monsters and bosses.
- Earning points for blocks, skips, and extensions.
- Collecting alchable items, runes, herbs, seeds, and supplies.
- Learning which targets are weak to stab, slash, or crush.
- Progressing Combat Achievements and wider account goals.
It is usually inefficient to choose weak low-level monsters only because they drop herbs, bones, or seeds. When money is the immediate problem, use a dedicated method from the OSRS money-making guide and return to a better combat target afterward.
Pest Control as a Melee Training Method
Pest Control awards normal combat experience during each game and allows commendation points to be exchanged for additional combat XP afterward.
The Intermediate lander requires 70 combat, while the Veteran lander requires 100 combat. Combat Achievement rewards increase the number of commendation points awarded per successful game. Hard Combat Achievements add three points per win, which can make a substantial difference over a long session.
Pest Control should not be described as universally one of the fastest melee methods. Its actual efficiency depends on:
- Your combat and Hitpoints levels.
- The length and success rate of each game.
- Your Combat Achievement tier.
- How much combat XP you gain while participating.
- The reward XP received when points are spent.
- Whether the team consistently completes games quickly.
For a high-combat player with Hard Combat Achievements, reliable teams, and short games, Pest Control can be competitive with strong conventional methods. For a lower-level player in slower games, Scurrius, Sulphur Naguas, or Nightmare Zone may produce better or more predictable results.
Melee Weapon Progression and the July 2026 Buffs
The best training weapon is not always the item with the highest price or the largest hit. Attack speed, accuracy, Strength bonus, damage type, target Defence, and set effects all affect the final result.
Level 60 Attack
The dragon scimitar remains a practical Strength training weapon after Monkey Madness I. Reaching 60 Attack is an important breakpoint, but most accounts should return to Strength rather than immediately rushing higher Attack.
Level 70 Attack
The abyssal whip remains one of the best general-purpose weapons for training Attack and Defence. It is fast, affordable, and does not degrade.
The whip cannot train Strength independently. Use a separate Strength weapon such as an abyssal dagger, Saradomin sword, abyssal bludgeon, or an appropriate Nagua weapon.
Osmumten's Fang
Osmumten's fang is designed for consistency against high-Defence enemies. Its slower attack speed means it is not automatically the best option at crabs, low-Defence Nightmare Zone bosses, or other dedicated training targets.
Ghrazi Rapier
The Ghrazi rapier is a fast, high-level Stab weapon suited to conventional training and targets weak to Stab. The July 22, 2026 Summer Sweep-Up increased its Stab accuracy by 6 and its Strength bonus by 4, making it more competitive than its previous version.
Blade of Saeldor
The Blade of Saeldor fills a similar role for Slash. The same update increased its Slash accuracy by 6 and its Strength bonus by 4. A corrupted blade does not consume charges, although creating one requires the relevant Prifddinas progression and crystal resources.
Inquisitor's Mace
Inquisitor's mace is the premium fast Crush option. The July 2026 update added 7 Crush accuracy and 7 Strength bonus. Inquisitor armour was also changed so that individual pieces provide their own Crush damage and accuracy benefits rather than depending on the old mace-specific set interaction.
Soulreaper Axe
The Soulreaper Axe was substantially changed on July 22, 2026. Its current stack mechanic is based on damage, not temporary Strength levels.
- The axe gained 4 additional Strength bonus.
- Each stack provides a 6% damage bonus.
- The maximum remains five stacks, for up to 30% additional damage.
- Stacks begin decreasing after 50 ticks instead of 20.
- Building stacks no longer drains Hitpoints.
- The special attack gains 12% accuracy per stack.
- The special attack gains a 6% minimum hit per stack.
At five stacks, the special attack receives up to 60% additional accuracy and a 30% minimum hit. The axe can be extremely powerful when stacks are maintained, but it is still more involved than using a normal four-tick weapon.
The full current changes are available in Jagex's Summer Sweep-Up Gear and PvM update.
Gear Upgrades That Matter More Than a Generic Budget Table
A rigid budget, mid-range, and high-end table is not especially useful because equipment prices change and different methods need different items. These are the upgrades that usually provide more value than buying a marginally stronger weapon.
| Upgrade | Why It Matters | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Dragon defender | Adds strong offensive bonuses to most one-handed weapons | Very high after reaching the Warriors' Guild requirements |
| Barrows gloves | Provide strong all-around melee bonuses and reward useful quest progression | High for a first account |
| Fighter torso | Provides a Strength bonus without requiring an expensive body upgrade | High when willing to complete Barbarian Assault |
| Helm of Neitiznot | Affordable mix of Strength, Prayer, and Defence | Strong early and mid-game option |
| Berserker ring imbue | Increases the ring's Strength contribution | Often better value than a minor weapon replacement |
| Offensive prayers | Improve damage throughout the entire session | Essential when supply costs are manageable |
| Attack and Strength potions | Increase accuracy and maximum hits for a low hourly cost | Use during nearly every serious training session |
At harmless targets, prioritize Strength bonus over tank armour. At dangerous Slayer monsters or bosses, survivability, Prayer, and the correct damage type may become more important.
Before buying a rapier, Saeldor, mace, Torva piece, or other premium upgrade, check whether the same money would accomplish more through Prayer levels, potions, a defender, Barrows gloves, a ring imbue, or simply additional Strength training.
Common OSRS Melee Training Mistakes
Keeping Every Stat Identical
Balanced numbers look neat, but they are not normally the fastest route. Reach the Attack requirement for the weapon you need, then let Strength move ahead.
Choosing Weapons by Maximum Hit
A slow weapon can display larger hits while producing less damage over time. Compare attack speed and realistic accuracy, not just the largest possible number.
Using Fang Against Low-Defence Targets
Fang is strongest when its accuracy mechanics matter. Faster weapons can outperform it against enemies that are already easy to hit.
Wearing Defensive Armour at Crabs
Additional Defence does almost nothing when the target barely deals damage. Replace unnecessary tank pieces with equipment that improves Strength or accuracy.
Ignoring Potions
Combat potions are not only defensive supplies. Their boosted stats increase experience throughout the session and often save more time than their GP cost suggests.
Remaining at Crabs Without a Reason
Crabs are excellent when the goal is AFK progress. They are less useful when you want Slayer, drops, Combat Achievements, or PvM practice.
Trusting One Exact XP Number
Experience rates change with stats, gear, prayers, target selection, pathing, world population, and attention. Use published rates as comparison points, not guarantees.
Three Practical Routes to Level 99 Melee
| Route | Progression | Best For |
|---|---|---|
| Low-Attention Route | Waterfall Quest, Sand Crabs, Ammonite or Gemstone Crab, then Nightmare Zone | Players who want long AFK sessions |
| High-XP Route | Early quests, brief crab training, Scurrius, Sulphur Naguas, then optimized Naguas or efficient Pest Control | Players prioritizing experience per hour |
| First-Account Route | Early quests, defenders, Recipe for Disaster, Scurrius, Slayer, and occasional Naguas or Nightmare Zone | Players who want melee levels and broader account progression |
Low-Attention Route
Complete Waterfall Quest and Witch's House, train at Sand or Ammonite Crabs until your preferred weapon requirements are reached, then move into a Normal Nightmare Zone rumble. Use a complete obsidian or Blood Moon setup before considering Dharok's at a high Hitpoints level.
High-XP Route
Use quests for the earliest levels, spend only enough time at crabs to build a usable setup, and move into Scurrius. Unlock Sulphur Naguas as soon as the required account progression is reasonable, then improve the Nagua setup over time. Efficient Pest Control becomes an alternative later when combat level, Combat Achievements, and game speed make it worthwhile.
First-Account Route
Do not treat melee levels as an isolated grind. Obtain defenders, progress Recipe for Disaster, unlock transportation, train at Scurrius, and begin Slayer. Use Nightmare Zone or Sulphur Naguas when you need a specific level quickly, then return to activities that develop the rest of the account.
Players training on free worlds can follow our OSRS F2P Melee Training Guide for the best weapons, enemies, and routes available without membership.
Choose the Method Based on What the Account Still Needs
A new account normally benefits more from quests, equipment unlocks, Scurrius, and Slayer than from rushing 99 Strength inside one isolated training area. A developed account may have no need for that wider progression and can instead choose the most convenient or fastest method available.
Use crabs when low attention is the goal, Scurrius when you want experience and basic PvM practice, Sulphur Naguas when you want high sustained melee XP, Nightmare Zone when you want controlled AFK sessions, and Slayer when the rest of the account matters as much as the melee level.
The most efficient decision is not always the method with the highest theoretical XP. It is the method that gives you the levels you need without ignoring the quests, equipment, skills, or combat experience that you will need immediately afterward.
