RuneScape & OSRS Membership Increases Again: Up Almost 20% In Four Years

RuneScape and Old School RuneScape membership is increasing again in 2026. The new monthly price will be 14.99 USD starting April 9 for most players. This is the second increase in recent years and pushes membership nearly 20 percent higher than it was in 2022. The new price also puts RuneScape subscriptions at the same level as major MMOs like World of Warcraft.

Jagex says the change supports future development and long term improvements for both games. Players across the community are already debating the increase, especially because of how RuneScape accounts work compared to other MMO subscriptions.

What The New RuneScape Membership Price Is

RuneScape and Old School RuneScape membership will cost 14.99 USD per month starting April 2026.

New subscriptions began using the updated price on March 10. Existing members will see the new price at their next billing cycle after April 9.

Players who are on older grandfathered monthly subscriptions will keep their current price as long as their membership stays active. Those rates apply to subscriptions that have remained active since before September 27, 2024.

Bond prices are also increasing to stay in line with the updated membership cost.

RuneScape Membership Has Risen Quickly Since 2022

The newest increase follows another membership change that happened not long ago.

Recent membership pricing history:

  • 2018 membership price 10.99 USD per month

  • 2022 membership price 12.49 USD per month

  • 2024 membership price 13.99 USD per month

  • 2026 membership price 14.99 USD per month

The jump from 12.49 to 13.99 in 2024 was about a 12 percent increase. The new change from 13.99 to 14.99 adds roughly another 7 percent increase.

When combined together, RuneScape membership is now close to 20 percent higher than it was in 2022.

RuneScape Membership Now Matches World of Warcraft Pricing

With the new price set at 14.99 USD per month, RuneScape now costs the same as some of the largest MMO subscriptions.

Typical MMO subscription pricing today:

  • RuneScape and Old School RuneScape 14.99 USD per month

  • World of Warcraft 14.99 USD per month

  • Final Fantasy XIV roughly 12.99 to 14.99 depending on the plan

The comparison stands out because of how RuneScape accounts work: Many MMOs allow several characters on one subscription. RuneScape membership instead applies to a single character account.

RuneScape Accounts Only Allow One Character

RuneScape accounts function differently from many other MMORPG subscriptions. A membership covers only one character. If a player wants to start another character such as an Ironman or alternate account, a second membership is required.

That design has always been part of RuneScape, but the comparison becomes more noticeable as the monthly price moves closer to other MMO subscriptions.

You Cannot Play OSRS And RuneScape 3 At The Same Time

RuneScape membership gives access to both RuneScape 3 and Old School RuneScape. However, players cannot log into both games simultaneously on the same account. Only one character session can be active at a time.

A player who wants to play OSRS while also playing RuneScape 3 would need a separate account and another membership subscription.

Other Membership Changes Included In The Update

The membership announcement also included a few additional changes.

  • The 6 month membership option is being removed

  • Bond prices (which allow you to use in-game gold for membership/vice versa) are increasing alongside membership pricing

  • Grandfathered monthly subscriptions remain unchanged while active

Players using bonds or non recurring payment methods may need to switch to a recurring subscription if they want to preserve their older pricing.

What Jagex Says The Price Increase Supports

Jagex explained that the increase is intended to support the future development of both RuneScape games.

According to the announcement, the price change helps fund several areas:

  • infrastructure upgrades

  • long term content roadmaps

  • improved player support systems

  • stronger anti cheat tools

Jagex also stated the goal is to keep RuneScape sustainable for the next 25 years.

Some Players Link The Increase To Recent MTX Changes

The timing of the membership increase has sparked debate in the RuneScape community. Recently, Jagex significantly reduced microtransactions in RuneScape (RS3), scaling back several monetization systems that had been heavily criticized by players for years.

Because of that shift, some players believe the membership increase may be partly tied to making up for revenue previously generated through MTX in RuneScape.

This has created some tension among Old School RuneScape players in particular. OSRS has long avoided most forms of microtransactions, and some players feel that raising the shared membership price means they are indirectly helping offset changes made to RuneScape’s monetization.

Other players argue the increase was likely planned regardless of MTX changes, especially given the rising costs of operating long running online games.

Final Note

Membership prices have increased several times throughout RuneScape’s long history, but the changes in 2024 and 2026 happened closer together than most earlier adjustments. With membership now set at 14.99 USD per month and matching the price of other major MMO subscriptions, the increase has quickly become one of the most talked about topics in the RuneScape and Old School RuneScape community.
