RuneScape Is About to Split Its Economy in Two
RuneScape is about to do something considerably stranger than simply launch another set of fresh-start servers.
When RuneScape Reignited arrives on December 2, its new characters will enter the same worlds veteran players already inhabit, join the same clans and potentially stand beside players carrying more than two decades of account history. Economically, however, the two groups will effectively live in different versions of Gielinor.
Reignited characters will start from nothing with their own economy, Grand Exchange and hiscores. They can trade with other Reignited players, but not veteran characters, while veteran players are similarly blocked from trading into the new economy. Jagex is effectively placing a fresh RuneScape economy inside the existing game without physically separating the people participating in it.
RuneScape Reignited Is a Fresh Start Without Fresh Servers
Fresh-start experiences in MMOs normally accomplish their reset by separating players. New servers open, everyone begins at roughly the same point and years of accumulated wealth remain safely contained somewhere else.
Reignited takes a different approach.
Jagex describes it as a permanent new character type, similar in concept to choosing an Ironman character. Reignited players will still inhabit RuneScape alongside everyone else, and the two groups can communicate, join the same clans and encounter one another throughout Gielinor. What they cannot do is transfer wealth between the two economies.
Reignited characters get their own Grand Exchange, can only trade with other Reignited characters and even use separate boss instances from veteran players. That creates an unusual form of separation where two people can share the same game world while the items and gold they possess effectively belong to different financial systems.
It is a significant distinction from simply opening RuneScape Reignited as another server. Jagex gets the economic reset of a fresh-start MMO without completely removing new players from the population it already has.
Twenty-Five Years of RuneScape Wealth Can't Cross Over
The restriction is central to what Jagex is trying to accomplish.
RuneScape has had 25 years for its economy to mature. Items have been created, traded and stockpiled across generations of players, while veterans can enter new content carrying enormous amounts of wealth and years of accumulated progression. Reignited removes that advantage by making every participating character begin again.
Jagex says the resulting economy will not begin with the same abundance of materials and items available to veteran characters. Something commonplace on the existing Grand Exchange could initially become valuable in Reignited simply because nobody has spent decades producing it yet.
That effectively puts RuneScape's economy back through its opening years at high speed. Players will need to establish supply chains again, determine early prices and decide which resources are worth gathering when the market is not already saturated by millions of hours of previous play.
The difference is that all of this will happen inside a game whose systems, quests and strategies have already been studied for decades.
Jagex Is Resetting the Race Too
The economy is not the only part of RuneScape being restarted.
Reignited will receive new hiscores, while the Hall of Legends will reopen races for world-first achievements across combat, skilling, quests and exploration. Players who claim qualifying achievements can be permanently represented with statues of their characters inside the Hall.
That gives experienced players something RuneScape can rarely offer anymore: the ability to be first again.
The game's oldest achievements were settled years or even decades ago, and its mature economy makes a completely level competitive starting point nearly impossible for anyone joining today. Reignited effectively takes 25 years of solved content and turns parts of it back into a race.
Jagex is also stripping away several systems that have become particularly controversial among existing players. Reignited is being marketed without Treasure Hunter or paid progression, while officially supported plugins, an Adventure Guide and a remastered early-game journey are intended to make starting from Lumbridge less daunting than it is in the existing game.
The Reset Comes With a Pretty Big Catch
For existing RuneScape players, none of those improvements transfer thousands of hours of progression onto a Reignited character.
Participating means starting again.
That has already become one of the more contentious parts of the announcement. Some veteran players have questioned whether a cleaner economy and revised early-game experience are enough to convince them to abandon years of skills, quests, unlocks, pets and other accomplishments, while others have raised concerns about dividing attention between veteran and Reignited progression.
Jagex's shared-world approach appears designed partly to reduce that problem. Veteran characters are not being replaced, their worlds are not being shut down and Reignited characters will remain visible members of the same broader community.
But economically, the wall between them is intentional. A veteran with billions of gold cannot bankroll a new Reignited character, and Jagex says gold swapping into or out of Reignited will be prohibited as part of its effort to protect the integrity of the fresh economy.
And Then There Is RuneScape 4
The timing becomes even more unusual because Reignited is arriving just as Jagex begins talking publicly about an entirely new RuneScape MMORPG.
At RuneFest, Jagex also confirmed that its fourth MMO is now in development using Unreal Engine. The unnamed project, commonly being referred to as RuneScape 4 or RS4 for now, begins in Ashenfall and is expected to eventually expand farther into Gielinor. Jagex says it remains several years away and has not yet answered basic questions surrounding accounts, membership, combat, skills or progression.
The two announcements arriving during the same event immediately created questions about what happens to the current RuneScape, particularly among players being asked to consider starting another character in Reignited before a completely new MMO arrives later.
Jagex insists the new MMO is not replacing RuneScape, Old School RuneScape or Dragonwilds. It is being developed as another independent game alongside them, while the existing RuneScape already has a substantial 2027 roadmap planned.
Jagex Is Trying to Reset RuneScape Without Erasing It
That may ultimately be the most interesting part of Reignited.
RuneScape has a problem most games would love to survive long enough to encounter. Its history is one of its greatest strengths, but that same history means a new player enters a game carrying 25 years of accumulated systems, economic baggage and players who are unimaginably far ahead.
Reignited attempts to reset that experience without deleting any of it.
Veterans keep their characters. New and returning players get a clean economy. Both groups occupy the same Gielinor, but the wealth accumulated on one side cannot simply flood into the other.
When Reignited launches December 2, RuneScape therefore will not simply have old players and new players sharing the same world. It will have two populations standing next to each other while playing by completely different economic histories.
For a 25-year-old MMO trying to recreate the feeling of everyone starting together, that may be about as close to turning back the clock as Jagex can get without actually wiping it.
