World of Warcraft Midnight Prey Guide: Hunts, Affixes, Rewards
World of Warcraft (WoW) Midnight introduces Prey as a structured open world hunting activity where you track down powerful targets across Quel’Thalas. You activate a Hunt, complete zone objectives to draw out your target, survive ambush mechanics, and defeat the final boss for gear, currency, and seasonal progression.
Prey is optional content, but it ties directly into the Great Vault and a dedicated Preyseeker Journey track, which makes it relevant for gearing in Season 1.
How To Unlock Prey In Midnight
You unlock Prey after gaining access to Silvermoon City in Midnight.
To start:
Visit Astalor’s Sanctum in Silvermoon City
Accept the introductory quest from Astalor Bloodsworn
Complete the short quest chain
Unlock Normal difficulty Hunts at the Hunt Table
Normal Hunts are available while leveling.
Hard and Nightmare difficulties unlock once you reach Level 90.
How Prey Hunts Work
Prey Hunts are activated at the Hunt Table inside Astalor’s Sanctum.
When selecting a Hunt, you will see:
The target
The zone
The difficulty
Active affixes
Potential rewards
After choosing a Hunt, travel to the listed zone. Instead of immediately fighting the boss, you must first build progress to reveal your target.
You gain Hunt progress by completing activities in that zone:
Killing enemies
Completing World Quests
Defeating rares
Looting treasures
Disabling traps
As you complete objectives, your progress increases. Once enough progress is earned, your target’s location becomes visible, and you can trigger the final encounter.
Prey Ambushes Explained
While working toward your Hunt objective, your target may ambush you.
Ambushes happen mid combat in the Hunt zone. To survive:
Reduce the target to 50 percent health
Or use a Disarmed Trap
If successful, the target retreats and grants Hunt progress plus Remnant of Anguish currency. You can then Riposte the target afterward for bonus progress.
Ambushes are part of what separates Prey from normal World Quests.
Prey Difficulty Levels And Affixes
Each difficulty adds mechanics that increase challenge.
Normal difficulty includes Ambush mechanics.
Hard difficulty adds effects like:
Torment, which increases damage taken as your progress builds
Hunter’s Momentum, which reduces Hunt progress on death
Seeping Gore, damaging ground effects
Nightmare difficulty includes all previous affixes plus:
Echo of Predation, a stalking spirit that deals heavy Shadow damage
Bloody Command, forcing you to kill a marked enemy or suffer heavy damage
Nightmare is designed as the highest risk, highest reward option.
Preyseeker Journey Track
Prey has its own seasonal progression called the Preyseeker Journey.
You earn Journey progress by completing Hunts.
Your first 4 Hunts per week grant 1000 Journey each
Additional Hunts grant 50 Journey
This makes 4 weekly Hunts the most efficient way to progress.
Journey ranks unlock cosmetics, mounts, pets, and other rewards tied to the Prey system.
Prey Rewards And Gear
Completing a Hunt grants:
Gold
Preyseeker Journey progress
A Preyseeker Adventurer Chest
Reward gear scales by difficulty:
Normal drops Adventurer Track gear
Hard drops Veteran Track gear
Nightmare drops Champion Track gear
Prey Hunts also count toward the World row of the Great Vault.
Vault reward tiers scale with difficulty:
Normal contributes toward Veteran Track
Hard contributes toward Champion Track
Nightmare contributes toward Hero Track
Prey can be combined with Delves and other open world activities to unlock all 3 World Vault slots.
Vendor Rewards And Currency
Construct V’anore inside Astalor’s Sanctum acts as the Prey vendor.
Prey Hunts can drop Anguish Runes in different tiers. These can be exchanged for:
Remnant of Anguish
Voidlight Marl
Coffer Key Shards
Dawncrests
Vendor items include:
Transmog armor ensembles
Cosmetic armor pieces gated by Journey rank
Mounts
Pets
A Hearthstone cosmetic
Profession recipes for Enchanting and Inscription
Higher Journey ranks unlock more exclusive rewards.
Is Prey Worth Doing
Prey is structured open world content that blends World Quests, rare hunting, and affix style mechanics.
It is worth doing if:
You want additional Great Vault progress
You enjoy open world boss encounters
You are farming cosmetics or mounts
You want an alternative to Delves
It may feel similar to structured zone objectives, but the layered affixes and ambush system add tension beyond standard World Quests.
For players focused on gearing efficiently, completing 4 Hunts per week is the key breakpoint.
Prey in Midnight is not mandatory, but it is a consistent source of rewards and seasonal progression if you engage with it regularly.
